Burnham Flatfish Open – Pre-match Review

In Local Fishing Events by James T Madsen

Channel Anglers

We are looking forward to the Burnham Flatfish Open this coming Sunday 3rd September. In this report we cover every aspect of the competition, including some useful tips on how to fish the venue for flatfish.

A match for everyone to enjoy!

Within this competition there will be two separate sections to win, heaviest flatfish and best total length of flatfish (flounder and Dover sole only).

Heaviest Flatfish – Sponsored by Cox and Rawle

Anyone could win this section of the competition. It is only £2 to enter, with no less than six prizes up for grabs! You need to weigh your biggest flatfish on the official match scales at the end of the competition. To qualify for this section your Dover sole or flounder must be over 32cm in length.

Cox and Rawle are kindly putting up 5 goodie bags for the top five heaviest flatfish. These goodie bags will be filled with hooks and components. Cox and Rawle are well known for their quality top end product, so this will be a cracking prize to win!

Biggest flatfish also wins £100 guaranteed!

Best Total Length – £10 optional pool

All Dover sole and flounder over 18cm count. Once landed fish will need to be measured, witnessed by a steward and returned. Remember to keep your best flatfish (once witnessed over 32cm) in a bucket to weigh at the end of the match. The £10 pool is 100% payout, paying the top 3 best lengths in each of the two zones.

That’s 12 fishing prizes up for grabs!

Two roving zones

There will be two zones in this competition, red and yellow. Red zone will start just right of the slipway at Burnham and finish at the end of the sea wall past the Pavilion. Yellow zone will begin where red zone ends and finish just past the lighthouse.

Roving zones means you can fish anywhere you like within the zone that you have drawn. Family and friends may still all fish together by simply notifying the organisers of their wish prior to drawing.

Sign on at the Bay View Café between 7am – 8.30am – Postcode TA8 1BU

Venue, bait and tackle

We will be fishing two hours either side of low water on hard clay and peat ledges. The tide can be feirce at Burnham on Sea and the flatfish tend to feed just inside of the tide. This match will mainly consist of short range fishing, meaning everyone has a good chance to compete. Grip leads aren’t a necessity when fishing short but we recommend having a few in your box.

We also recommend smaller hooks for numbers of flatfish (size 6 & 4s), fish them on simple flapping rigs with small Lug and Ragworm baits. You may find that the larger sole prefer a big Rag bait but the big flounder generally like Lugworm. You could try the Cox and Rawle offset light wire Aberdeen, a super hook fit for purpose.

Don’t fish too light because there are peat ledge in the channel at varied distances. Your lead may get stuck in the ledges and heavier mainline will cut out most of the tackle losses. Mainline of around .40mm diameter or 20lb breaking strain is ideal.

1 rod with a maximum of 3 hooks

Weigh-in and Presentation

After the match everyone will need to head for the Burnham Sailing club, which is located at the far left hand end of the sea wall. There will be some parking spaces available – postcode TA8 1DL

The weigh-in will take place in the yard at the Sailing club. Located next to the mouth of the river Brue means fish can be safely returned if necessary. Once all the fish have been weighed, the presentation will commence in the club house. Inside the Sailing club you will find a fully licensed bar serving drinks and light snacks available for purchase.

Additional junior prizes have been kindly donated by Cox and Rawle and we all hope to see a good few juniors fishing this event.

Enjoy a great social occasion!
